By day, Sue is a textile artist working with dye painting and machine quilting to make realistic quilts depicting wild animals. At dusk Sue becomes a slow stitcher, making Hawaiian quilts and other projects using hand appliqué and hand quilting. She lived most of 2012 through 2014 in Honolulu where she was part of a Hawaiian quilting class, and there she learned about the techniques, design and cultural significance of Hawaiian quilting.

Students will work on their choice of Sue’s 3 introductory Hawaiian quilts shown below, or alternately may choose from a limited selection of 20”x20” quilts from www.Poakalani.net.

In the first session from 9:00 am to noon (PT) on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, students will make the quilt top following traditional Hawaiian methods of folding and cutting the fabric, and hand stitched needle turn appliqué.

Students will have ample time to complete the appliqué and make the quilt sandwich in preparation for the second class from 9:00 am to noon (PT) on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Students will learn how to plan and execute the quilting for their selected piece using a quilting hoop. Although the class project is a small quilt, Sue will cover the tips and techniques applicable to larger Hawaiian quilting projects.

  • Two sessions:
    November 15, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
    January 3, 2023, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
  • Fee: $50 (members), $70 (non-members)
