By day, Sue is a textile artist working with dye painting and machine quilting to make realistic quilts depicting wild animals. At dusk Sue becomes a slow stitcher, making Hawaiian quilts and other projects using hand appliqué and hand quilting. She lived most of 2012 through 2014 in Honolulu where she was part of a Hawaiian quilting class, and there she learned about the techniques, design and cultural significance of Hawaiian quilting.

Students will work on their choice of Sue’s 3 introductory Hawaiian quilts shown below, or alternately may choose from a limited selection of 20”x20” quilts from

In the first session from 9:00 am to noon (PT) on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, students will make the quilt top following traditional Hawaiian methods of folding and cutting the fabric, and hand stitched needle turn appliqué.

Students will have ample time to complete the appliqué and make the quilt sandwich in preparation for the second class from 9:00 am to noon (PT) on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Students will learn how to plan and execute the quilting for their selected piece using a quilting hoop. Although the class project is a small quilt, Sue will cover the tips and techniques applicable to larger Hawaiian quilting projects.

Join us for the best of Mel: Mark Making Magic and Design by Dice

We’ll spend the morning transforming solid fabrics into your own original prints layered with colors, patterns, and textures! Discover all the mark-making potential of everyday household items as you create stamped circles, dots, lines, and grids. Not only are these fabrics super fun and meditative to make, but they look fabulous layered and stitched into your art quilts!

Then, during the afternoon, we’ll use some of your newly created palette to play with Design by Dice. Add a playful twist of inspiration to your quilt designs through the use of dice! Mell will introduce how she uses dice to challenge herself and explore new design combinations in terms of color schemes, elements of art, design principles, block orientation, and quilting motifs. Then it will be your turn to roll the dice and play with these concepts through several hands-on exercises using your newly marked fabrics!

The most beautiful gemstone captures light and reflects it back to us with unique brilliance, revealing its fiery personality. These are the divas and the drama queens of the gem world. Every one of them has a story to tell…just like people. This slide lecture and trunk show chronicle MJ's story–her 20-year adventure learning how to create the biggest diamonds in the world in the softest medium–cloth.

During her presentation, MJ will discuss how she selects gems that qualify as “divas and drama queens” and what they teach us about how to add sparkle to any art quilt. She will talk about the techniques to create and assemble the hundreds of pieces in each diamond, materials she uses to create the wash of color and light across a gem's surface, and the quilting techniques that enhance a gem's facets. And, as so often happens with any artist's decades-long journey, she will share what I’ve learned from her leap from the Corporate Life and into the Creative Life.

MJ is delighted to introduce guild members to the technique she uses to create all of her gem patterns: traditional piecing using freezer paper as a template. MJ has designed four patterns inspired by some of the world's most beautiful gems, all of which are made available to class participants. She will provide both the freezer paper patterns and the copies on regular papers of all 4 patterns.

Using freezer paper as a templates, participants will choose one of the fully charted gem patterns to make during class. During class, MJ will share all kinds of gossip about the gems and their outrageous, eccentric, and intriguing owners.
